The Analytic Hour

Political essays by Yunus Poblome

The Analytic Hour hosts my writings as a student of politics. The platform shares the name of Sigmund Freud’s therapeutic sessions of psychoanalysis.

  • Kapalı vs açık – A qualitative analysis of polarization around the headscarf issue with veiled and non-veiled IÜ students

Introduction The polarisation between religious conservative -or ‘pious’- and secular Turks has been a salient issue in Türkiye for a long time (Aydin-Düzgit & Balta, 2019; Kaya & Sunar, 2015). In 1973, Mardin highlighted the existing political cleavage between the urbanised secularist centre and the rural religious periphery in Türkiye that developed as a result…

  • How climate change may save us

Choosing between cooperation and competition While climate change has been an observable scientific reality for decades now, there seems no sign of the process slowing down. Scientists and interest groups have dedicated entire careers to lobbying and calling for thorough action to mitigate the effects of climate change to little avail. I myself was a…

  • Identity and Realpolitik

This essay was written for the journal Contact published by the Olivaint Society of Belgium. The era of Western unipolarity is gradually coming to an end. Deze shift in de internationale machtsbalans naar staten als…

  • Over “de” jeugd

Een recente column1 in De Standaard door leeftijdsgenoot Mauro Michielsen heeft me aan het denken gebracht. About me

I hold a BSc (cum laude) in Political Science from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Currently, I am completing a MSc in Political Science (VUB) and a MSc in International Politics from Ghent University (UGent). Beside my studies, I serve on the Editorial Board of the European Relations Association where I help students and young professionals towards their first publication(s) on European affairs. Previously, I have interned with prof. Eline Severs in the REDIRECT EU Horizon project and held board positions in the Royal Association Olivaint Conference of Belgium and the Belgian parliamentary simulation Jeugd Parlement Jeunesse. While I have written most rigourously about the populist radical right and the Palestinian question, I am currently interested in studying the politics of outer space from a critical security studies perspective.
